In the 1990s, East St. Louis, Illinois faced a man spreading death without a gun. His name was Darnell “Boss Man” McGee. He was diagnosed with HIV in 1992 and informed of his status by health officials. He even received counseling about how to prevent spreading the virus — but he never stopped having unprotected sex. Instead, he kept his diagnosis a deadly secret. McGee preyed on women and girls between the ages of 12 and 29, meeting them often at skating rinks, near schools, and in clubs. He was known for his skating skills, his flashy clothes, and his smooth talk. He’d tell girls they were pretty, make them feel special, buy them gifts, or take them shopping — often targeting those with low self-esteem or difficult home lives — all while hiding that he was HIV positive. He had sex with at least 61 women and girls, possibly more than 100. Reports later confirmed that at least 18, and possibly as many as 30, were infected. At least one woman gave birth to a baby who was also HIV positive. Authorities said his actions created a public health crisis and called it a clear abuse of power. In 1996, authorities moved to charge McGee with knowingly transmitting HIV, but he went into hiding before he could be arrested. On January 15, 1997, while driving through North St. Louis with a young woman, McGee, 28, stopped for a man who waved him down. The man walked up to his car window, shot him at close range, and went through his pockets before running off. The young woman fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Police said it looked like a robbery — but many believed it was a revenge killing.
