Armstrong went on to fly 78 combat missions in Korea. After the war, he served eight years in the Navy Reserve. Armstrong’s military service ended in 1960, almost a decade before he stepped on the moon on July 20, 1969, as part of the Apollo 11 mission. Armstrong died on August 25, 2012, at the age of 82.
