More reps or more weight? 🤔 The answer is situational and it all comes down to form. If your program calls for 10 to 12 reps and by rep 10 your reps are slowing way down, you’re fighting to keep form, and you’re close to or hitting failure, do not increase the weight. Rep range doesn’t matter as much as people think. Anybody saying low reps for strength, moderate reps for muscle, and high reps for “tone” is fueling the misconception. You can build muscle in 5–8 reps, 8–15 reps, or even 15–30 reps… IF you’re actually training close to failure. That said, spending more time in lower rep ranges (around 5–10) can make a lot of sense for most people. How to increase your set weights? The strict sets of ”x” reps is slowing you down. Better solution = rep ranges! This means that you will do for example 6-10 reps per set. Choose a weight that you can get around 6-7 reps in and then you keep working with that weight until you get again to 9-10 reps. When you accomplish that, try increasing the weight. Probably you can do less reps but it 100% fine if it is within the rep range of the earlier designated 6-10. Keep working that again up until 9-10

I recently chatted with someone about higher reps vs lower reps in strength training. The question became “isn’t it better to do more reps with a lighter weight?” As a trainer I know this one is not a simple yes or no answer.
