This stone circle has a brilliant story and it's found at Machrie Moor on Arran. It's known as Fingal's Cauldron Seat after the great Gaelic hero and legend says that he used the stones to support a huge cauldron for cooking his dinner. However, Fingal's enormous dog Bran wouldn't leave the warrior alone as he prepared his meal so he tied it up using a hole in one of the stones. A hole that's still there and still works perfectly. Don't worry, no Labradors were harmed in the making of this film!

No visit to the Isle of Arran is complete without seeing the incredible Machrie Moor Stones. Don't be fooled into thinking it's just these 3 iconic, sandstone monoliths though. The remains of six stone circles have been uncovered on the moor, in a landscape dotted with burial cists and hut circles. Some had been completely swallowed up by layers of peat, so who knows how many more are out there waiting to be found. It's clear that this whole area of Arran was sacred for a very long time. 6500 ye
